The Bernoulli disk housing features a write-protect mechanism to prevent the drive from writing to the disk within it. If the small screw is turned to configure the disk to be write-protected, a small post is lifted out of the write-protect hole in the disk housing. The drive detects that the disk has been configured to be protected and will ignore any commands telling it to write data to the disk.
